We have packed and shipped a number of valuable art pieces from galleries in Scottsdale but this Glass "Phoenix" was a delicate one. Gateway Crate and Freight has packed and shipped a few of these so we thought we would feature the one we shipped this month.
We start by surrounding the rounded outer glass with a piped foam protector. Bubble wrap is then placed in the space separating the two wings in the center and making a custom fitted box.
Not pictured to the right but added later was a 1" foam base bottom to absorb vibration and not cause cracking in the glass. An additional piece of foam was added to help stabilize the box and reduce the risk of compression at the top.
This is the inner box. This box was then placed in another box with 2 inches of space filled with polystyrene peanuts to provide an extra barrier of protection for the artwork.
Packing and shipping delicate large pieces like this successfully on a regular basis takes the right materials and know how. Before even designing the packaging we knew how this was going to ship. We determine parcel, truck, air etc. and then design the packaging.
Knowing this was traveling by freight truck we then knew a double box method utilizing some foam to cut down on vibration and bubble to protect the art inside the box was a safe and economical way to ship this.
The double box is then placed on a pallet and we banded the box down so it could not move on the pallet and the box is inside the dimension of the pallet. This allows a forklift to pick up and transfer the box but never come in contact with the box. The box is banded to the middle from the front or back where it would be moved.
